Enhancing and Amplifying Pedagogy with Digital Tools
You know what the iGeneration looks like in your classroom: Inheriting a world with almost universal access to the Internet, iGeners are almost universally plugged in. Ear buds hang from backpacks, and cell phones are stuffed into every pocket. Instant communication has replaced listening to messages, streaming video has replaced waiting for television shows to start, Xboxes have replaced Ataris, digital images have replaced negatives, and high-speed connections have replaced dial-up modems.
iGeners aren’t always the best students, however! Working quickly instead of carefully, they infosnack their way through class, flitting from instant experience to instant experience. Reading deeply, considering multiple perspectives and interacting with others in meaningful ways is pushed aside in a race for immediate gratification.
Moving learning forward, then, begins by introducing teachers to ways in which digital tools can be used to encourage higher-order thinking and innovative instruction in classrooms across the curriculum. Today’s students can be inspired by technology to ponder, imagine, reflect, analyze, memorize, recite and create—but only after we build a bridge between what they know about new tools and what we know about good teaching, a process introduced by Teaching the iGeneration author, blogger , tweeter, and full-time classroom teacher Bill Ferriter in this 75 minute video conference.

Our main strategy for teaching persuasion was the integration of Socratic seminars into our instruction. To extend these traditional, classroom-based conversations, we've started using VoiceThread.

Sample Activity 3: Creating Persuasive Videos
One of the key elements in the middle grades Computer/Technology skills curriculum here in North Carolina is understanding the ethical use of digital content. Specifically, students are expected to examine how copyright and fair use rules apply to digital images and music. To introduce my students to the changing nature of copyright in today’s digital age, we study Creative Commons Licenses and Creative Commons Image Warehouses. To practice finding and using Creative Commons content, students create Animoto videos to advertise the work of our Kiva Club.
