You know what the iGeneration looks like in your classroom: Inheriting a world with almost universal access to the Internet, iGeners are almost universally plugged in. Ear buds hang from backpacks, and cell phones are stuffed into every pocket. Instant communication has replaced listening to messages, streaming video has replaced waiting for television shows to start, Xboxes have replaced Ataris, digital images have replaced negatives, and high-speed connections have replaced dial-up modems.

iGeners aren’t always the best students, however! Working quickly instead of carefully, they infosnack their way through class, flitting from instant experience to instant experience. Reading deeply, considering multiple perspectives and interacting with others in meaningful ways is pushed aside in a race for immediate gratification.

Moving learning forward, then, begins by introducing teachers to ways in which digital tools can be used to encourage higher-order thinking and innovative instruction in classrooms across the curriculum. Today’s students can be inspired by technology to ponder, imagine, reflect, analyze, memorize, recite and create—but only after we build a bridge between what they know about new tools and what we know about good teaching, a process introduced by Teaching the iGeneration author, blogger , tweeter, and full-time classroom teacher Bill Ferriter in this 75 minute video conference.

What ARE Today's Learners Really Like?

One of the keys to enhancing and amplifying our pedagogy effectively is understanding how today's learners are different from learners in earlier generations.  This fun video---created by a group of students at the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia---presents these differences in an interesting...and challenging...way.

Sample Activity 1: VoiceThread

One of the key elements in the middle grades Language Arts curriculum here in North Carolina is written, verbal and visual persuasion.  Our main strategy for teaching persuasion was the integration of Socratic seminars into our instruction.  To extend these traditional, classroom-based conversations, we've started using VoiceThread.

Asynchronous Conversation Resources

There are literally dozens of pages of downloadable handouts in Teaching the iGeneration that can help teachers to structure asynchronous conversations in their classrooms.  Here are some of the best:

Learning about Conversation Behaviors -- a series of scenarios designed to introduce students to the kinds of behaviors that help and harm conversations.

Previewing an Asynchronous Conversation -- a handout that can be used as a preloading activity before students begin to make contributions in a VT.

Commenting in an Asynchronous Conversation -- a series of templates that students can use to craft a variety of comment types for a VT.

Reflecting on an Asynchronous Conversation -- a handout that can be used to guide student thinking after a VT has ended.

Scoring Student Participation in an Asynchronous Conversation -- A rubric that can be used to give students feedback about contributions added to a VT.

VoiceThread Survey Question

Please take a minute to answer the following question about asynchronous conversations in Voicethread as a tool for teaching and learning.  Doing so will help your district's Central Office to gauge interest in each of the technologies and teaching practices being introduced during the course of this webinar.

Sample Activity 2: Microlending

One of the key elements in the middle grades Social Studies curriculum here in North Carolina is understanding the differences between developed and developing nations.  Specifically, students are expected to find connections between governmental, economic and quality of life indicators.  Kiva---a microlending website that is remarkably easy to use---allows me to introduce students to these concepts in a tangible, real-world way.

Microlending Resources

There are literally dozens of pages of downloadable handouts in Teaching the iGeneration that can help teachers to structure microlending projects in their classrooms.  Here are some of the best:

What Country Should We Loan To? --  Can be used by groups to gather basic demographic information about developing countries.

Kiva Loan Questions -- Guides students through a series of questions worth considering when making a Kiva loan.

Persuasive Speech Organizer -- Helps students to craft a persuasive speech designed to convince peers to embrace a specific entrepreneur.

Do Something Funny for Money Day -- Details an easy service project fundraiser that can be used to generate initial funds for a microlending project.

Sample Activity 3: Creating Persuasive Videos

One of the key elements in the middle grades Computer/Technology skills curriculum here in North Carolina is understanding the ethical use of digital content. Specifically, students are expected to examine how copyright and fair use rules apply to digital images and music. To introduce my students to the changing nature of copyright in today’s digital age, we study Creative Commons Licenses and Creative Commons Image Warehouses.  To practice finding and using Creative Commons content, students create Animoto videos to advertise the work of our Kiva Club.

Persuasive Video Resources

There are literally dozens of pages of downloadable handouts in Teaching the iGeneration that can help teachers to structure persuasive video projects in their classrooms.  Here are some of the best:

Checklist for Creating Influential Visual Images -- walks students through the process of planning and then crafting an influential visual.

Scoring an Influential Visual Image -- provides teachers and students with a clear set of criteria for rating influential visual images.

Scripting Template for Persuasive Video -- walks students through the process of creating an influential video.

Ongoing Asynchronous Conversation

Over the next three days, you are invited to participate in an asynchronous VoiceThread conversation about responsible teaching with digital tools.  Stop by and learn more about how digital tools can enhance and amplify your instruction.  Stop by and get individual questions answered by session presenter Bill Ferriter.  Most importantly, stop by and experiment with a tool that can make a real difference in your classroom, regardless of what subject you teach!
